Let’s do the math nobody wants to do.

Say you run a $2M business. Every pricing exception, every hire, every piece of client work that needs a final look, it all routes through you. That feels normal because it’s always been this way. It’s also costing you a lot more than you’ve calculated.

Where It Actually Shows Up

Speed. If a proposal sits in your inbox for four days waiting on a sign-off, that’s four days a competitor had to close the deal first. Multiply that across every approval that waited on you this quarter and you start to see revenue that moved slower than it had to.

Your team. Managers who are capable of owning decisions but never get the authority to make those decisions, they stop acting like managers. They disengage, or they leave. This exact pattern cost a client two good people in eighteen months. Both of them told her in their exit conversations that they never felt trusted to run their own area.

You. Burnout isn’t a soft cost. It’s the ceiling on how good of a leader you can be, because growth takes energy and intentionality you can’t access running on empty.

Here’s the part leaders and owners don’t want to hear: every one of those costs compounds. A slow approval costs a deal. A disengaged manager costs a hire. A burned out leader costs both. These three items often collide at the wrong time.

Why Nobody Sees It Coming

None of this shows up as a clean line item on a P&L labeled “cost of being the bottleneck.” It shows up as slower growth, higher turnover, and a leader/founder who’s been tired in a way that started affecting decisions months before they admitted it.

I’ve sat across the table from owners who couldn’t believe how much it was actually costing them once we put numbers to it. No one ever sits down to add this up. But this number is often higher than they think.

The Fix Isn’t Complicated

It follows a sequence:

Clarity on who owns what.

The authority to back it up.

A way to track whether it’s working.

That’s it. That’s the work.

Once you get those foundational pieces in place, the shift that will happen in your business will be noticeable.

PS — If you’ve never actually run these numbers for your business, that’s worth doing before you write next year’s budget. In a focused strategy session, we’ll map where decisions are bottlenecking through you, identify the 3–5 roles that need real authority, and outline a roadmap to get you out of the way of your own growth.
