Last week I called out the assumption that a bigger revenue number means a healthier business. Revenue looks good, but it can hide a pricing problem, a delivery problem, or a team that’s about to walk. The number looks fine right up until it doesn’t.
That gap of what is working and what isn’t comes down to measurement, not knowledge. Most owners I work with know their industry and out. What they don’t have is a short list of numbers that would show them where the business is actually breaking, before it shows up somewhere that is detrimental to the business.
So this week I put together the list. One number for each of the six engines that run a business: finance, sales, marketing, operations, people, customers. Not the obvious metric in each category, the one that catches a problem earliest.
New opportunities created will show you a sales slowdown weeks before close rate does. By the time close rate drops, the pipeline behind it is already empty. Turnaround time will show you an operations problem months before a client ever complains about it. Retention rate moves before churn does, not after.
That’s the pattern across all seven. Pick the number that shows a potential issue first, and you get a warning instead of a surprise.
I wrote up the full breakdown, what to track, why that number over the obvious alternatives, and exactly how to measure it, in a short guide. Grab it here:
The 7 Numbers That Actually Tell You What’s Going On In Your Organization
Read it over and let me know, what is your current system lacking?

PS- I’ve reworked Structure 2 Scale based on some initial client feedback and I am looking for 5 people to go through it. The new co-hort starts on September 1st. 90 Days to get you from overwhelm, feeling trapped, and exhausted to gaining clarity, feeling supported and in control, and feeling a bit more freedom in your own business. I will only be taking 5 people.
The normal rate is $4500. For this next co-hort, I’m dropping the price to $2,100 in exchange for your honest feedback. Reply if you want more details.
